If
you are planning to do a lot of gardening, hauling around large amounts
of rocks, compost, decorations, and plants can be tough. Dirt, mulch
and compost in particular are difficult to handle without a wheelbarrow
or garden cart.
Wheelbarrows are great for large loads of dirt or other loose material
but can be unwieldy with heavy loads and they lack good surfaces to
put flats of plants or tools on. Garden carts have flat bottoms and
sides and thus are great for hauling plants and tools around. If you’re
looking to get a cart, take into account the following:
• Size: You’ll probably always want to haul more stuff than
you can fit in your cart at some point or another. But a small cart
is easier to maneuver and you are less likely to be able to overload
the cart with more materials than you can safely pull.
•Terrain and garden size: Most carts need to be pulled, as opposed
to wheelbarrows which are pushed. On steep inclines and rocky ground
this can be cumbersome, especially if you have a large cart. Likewise,
if you garden is small a wheelbarrow might suit your needs better.
Your cart doesn’t have to be purely for work, either. If your
garden is too small to require a cart for hauling, a small garden cart
can provide a mobile, good looking place to put your tools an add a
rustic feel to your garden even if you don’t use it for hauling
dirt– and that old cart you don’t need anymore can make
a great mobile planter, just remember to provide some holes for drainage.
