A
proper garden requires effort to maintain. Keeping animals or children
from trampling or disturbing your hard work is important. Garden fencing
can not only look great but it can keep animals from getting at your
produce or people from inadvertently stepping on your plants. Fencing
can also provide privacy, to create secluded garden areas conducive
to relaxation. Lastly, you may require a fence for security reasons
and you’d like it to look great with your garden as well.
Whether your fencing is mostly decorative or practical will influence
your material choice.
•Wire: If you are just looking to keep animals out, then a wire
fence is very practical. They are not immensely sturdy but they will
keep small animals and children away from your plants – the cheapest
kind is simple wire mesh but there are also ornamental and more decorative
varieties.
•Wood: Wood fences look great in a garden, be they the more open
picket or lattice variety or a solid stockade wall for maximum privacy.
Simple wood fences are not too demanding to put up on your own and they
are reasonably affordable. However, they will require maintenance. Wooden
garden fencing will require re-painting every few years and may rot
or decay, requiring some parts to be replaced.
•Vinyl: Vinyl garden fencing is a common alternative to wood –
it can be made to look almost the same and it does not require painting
or other maintenance. It can be washed simply with a hose. However it
tends to be more expensive that wood and is more difficult to install
yourself.
•Metal: Metal fencing is generally the most secure – and
it doesn’t have to sacrifice in looks, either. A wrought iron
fence will add a lot of charm to your garden. However it is usually
more expensive that other types of fencing and generally will require
professional installation.
