Gardening Equipment

Gardening equipment is the heading which applies to all the tools and machinery used in home or commercial gardening. Depending on the type of gardening you do; the kinds of equipment you need will vary greatly. Flower gardening requires a separate set of tools from vegetable gardening. Orchard maintenance requires yet another set of tools. Traditional European or Asian walking gardens require many tools not used elsewhere.

If you are fortunate enough to have a lot with garden beds waiting to be planted the tools you need for basic flower or vegetable gardening will be easily obtained. A rotary tiller is a must for tilling the soil of your garden beds, but with these types of gardens that may be the only piece of machinery you need. Watering can either be done by hand with a hose or water can, or you can set up a drip feed or misting system to water your plants automatically for you. Weeding is still done by hand with the aid of a trowel, spade, or other digging device.

If you are gardening for aesthetic reasons rather than for a harvest yield you will find more tools to help your efforts. Hand shears are a must for pruning easy to reach hedges or plants. However if you plan on keeping trees a pole pruner will save you hours of ladder setup and reaching to make cuts. Hedge trimmers are great for shaping hedges and come in both gas and electric powered types. If you prefer the traditional route a set of hedge shears will allow you to maintain your hedges without increasing your carbon footprint.

Depending on the size of trees in a decorative garden you may want to invest in a chainsaw. This power tool saves hours of tedious cutting by hand and the aches that will surely follow. Chainsaws are measured by engine capacity and bar length; a fairly standard home use saw would run a 12-18 inch bar with a 1-3 hp engine. While more expensive than hand saws, chainsaws make removal of damaged limbs a breeze.

If you are looking at a walking garden you will not only have bushes, small trees, and flowers; but you will more than likely want water plants, fountains or other water fixtures, sculptures, and larger trees. For large tree care, it is best to hire a professional to do the trimming. The dangers involved in working aloft are not something to be taken lightly. If you want a fish pond, it will be important to have a water circulation system, as well as cleaning implements and a fish net in case you need to change out the water or your climate freezes the pond solid. Water plants such as reeds and water lilies do not require the same attention that land based plants do, as weeds and insects are less a threat to them.

The last and often overlooked part of many decorative gardens is a lawn. Depending on the type of garden you are creating, you may have small grassed areas, or a large lawn central to the garden. Proper care of a lawn requires frequent mowing, edging, fertilization, and weeding. Mowers run the gauntlet of non-motorized push mowers to self-powered riding mowers. The right one for you will largely be determined by the area you need to mow.

The variety of gardening equipment can seem bewildering and intimidating, but it is easy to start out with a few simple tools and add to your collection as you need. The right tools will make your life much easier, and the best way to see which tools will help you the most is to get started and see what tasks you spend the most time on.
