There
are a large number of tools and garden supply options available for
the budding gardener, and it can be difficult to know what is necessary.
Especially if you have a small budget you will need to know what tools
you can do without and what you’re going to have to buy.
•Shovels: It’s difficult to go without a shovel as it may
be one of your most used garden supply items. While more specialized
tools exist for a lot of tasks, many can be performed nearly as well
with a shovel, making it nearly indispensable. The standard round nosed
shovel is probably the most versatile – but if you’ve got
a larger budget a flat shovel for scooping and a spade for digging might
be good options.
•Shears: a good pair of pruning shears is necessary for deadheading
flowers and cutting back growths with ease – many flowers and
plants will grow too large for you do cut them off neatly with just
your fingers and even a cheap pair of shears or clippers will make your
cutting efforts look much better.
•Rakes: You could clean up leaves, pulled weeds and debris by
hand but a rake is far more efficient. Metal tines are durable but more
expensive than plastic.
Other supplies may be necessary depending on what you are planning on
growing, but whatever tools you get, take care of them. Leaving tools
outside will cause rust and decay – hanging them inside a shed
or garage is ideal, but if you don’t have the room you can keep
them in a waterproof container outside.
