It
can be frustrating trying to start a garden from scratch. Perhaps you
want to grow some vegetables in your backyard, or your home has empty
flowerbeds that you don’t know what to do with. With some thought
and a little planning you can determine what kind of garden plants will
be right for your situation.
The first thing you should look at is location – if you’re
starting a garden from scratch, determine how much sunlight each part
of your yard gets- some plants enjoy the sun while others flourish in
the shade. Keep in mind the size of the location as well – make
sure the plants you get will fit. After you’ve found a suitable
spot for your plants then you will need to take a look at the soil.
If the area you’re using has been previously used as a garden
the soil is probably almost ready but untamed soil may not be suitable
for growing, depending on your area – you may need to till, add
compost or replace the soil entirely.
After you’ve found the perfect location, head down to your local
gardening center or home improvement store – generally stores
will have information about the garden plants and flowers they offer,
telling you about how much sun they like, when they will bloom and other
considerations. For a flower garden, take into account what time the
flowers will be blooming – by staggering plants with different
times you can have a garden that blossoms all summer long.
