Garden Pond Filter

Garden Pond FilterIf you are thinking about adding a pond to your garden, a garden pond filter is an essential item to keep your pond healthy and looking good. If left unfiltered, many natural elements and bacteria can grow in your pond, turning the water dirty or even toxic. Adding a filter can keep your water clear and clean and can promote a healthy environment for any fish and plants in your pond.

A garden pond can be filtered in three different ways: mechanical filtration, biological filtration, and chemical, or ultra-violet (UV) filtration. Mechanical filtration is the most common way to filter your pond. It is also the way that a garden pond filter can help. It is a way to remove larger objects such as leaves and twigs from your pond. Often times, mechanical filters are placed in the path of the water’s natural flow. They typically use skimmer boxes to capture debris. This allows you to remove it before it harmful bacteria can begin to grow.

The second way to filter your pond is through biological filtration. Simply put, biological filtration uses good bacteria to fight off and breakdown harmful bacteria. Often times, a substrate is used to aid in biological filtration. A substrate is a surface place in the bottom of a pond, such as gravel or crushed coral. Good bacteria grows all over the surface area of the substrate. As water passes over the substrate, the waste and harmful bacteria get converted to helpful carbon dioxide or nitrate. As long as the substrate takes up enough space and has sufficient surface area, biological filtration can be a key part of the overall filtration of your pond.

The third type of pond filtration is through chemical, or UV filtration. UV sterilizers work with the other types of filtration to help keep green algae out of your pond. UV filters are often placed right inside your garden pond filter, and can also help keep mosquitoes and other bugs out of your pond.

Each of these three filtration methods can be effective. But combining all three gives you the most effective garden pond filter. This will allow you to enjoy nice clear water and healthy fish and plant life.
