Garden Sheds

Garden sheds come in a few basic construction types. Some are metal frame with a metal “skin” put over it. Some are plastic frame and skin; others use a wooden frame with vinyl siding, or even all wooden construction. More permanent sheds are occasionally made of stone, brick, or cinder blocks. Each style of shed offers its own advantages and disadvantages, and what works for you is largely based on your specific needs.

Metal sheds are ideal when long term durability is your aim. However they are prone to rusting, and easily damaged by high winds or heavy snow and ice buildup during the winter. Plastic sheds are less expensive and lighter than metal sheds. They are generally more weather and damage resistant than wooden sheds. And if money is not an issue, stone or brick sheds set the standard for durability and resilience. Wooden garden sheds are usually chosen for their inexpensive nature, but they tend to require higher upkeep than other types of sheds.

Garden sheds first cropped up in old English usage in the 15th century as a place to keep farm animals and tools. The word shed itself seems to derive its roots from the old English words shud- for cover and shadde- for shade. Regardless of its origins garden sheds are ingrained in today’s gardening culture.
