Garden supplies exist to aid with the many different stages of gardening. These include such actions as planting, transplanting, pruning, and sometimes harvesting. Not only do tools and products exist for plant care, but plenty of items exist to store and maintain those tools and products.
Due to all these different levels of garden supplies, it is good for a beginner to get into this new hobby one stage at a time. There are lots of steps involved before the first seed or seedling is even planted.
First and foremost, a person interested in gardening may need to select the area. Of course, some people move into a home with an old space for gardening already in existence. For many people, they may not have such an expansive property so when it comes to adding such a feature there isn't a lot of choice.
However, plenty of people decide upon adding a garden from scratch. For them, the first step is selecting a location and preparing the land. Generally, garden supplies are not required for simple area selection. Basic measuring tools may be involved and occasionally soil testing supplies.
Remember that it is very normal for people to create good soil where it is needed. For that reason, a hardcore evaluation of the existing soil may not be necessary.
Factors to consider when choosing a gardening location include the amount of sunlight available and any risks the area might encourage. For the most part, a patch which gets at least six hours of sunlight during the day will do. Be mindful of whether there are any growing trees which will eventually block available sunlight or cause any similar future issues.
If the location will have standing water after rainfall, that is often a problem. Also, if it is close to recreational areas for children or pets, that may invite damage to delicate plants.
Once the area is chosen, the need for garden supplies generally begins coming into play.
The most basic tool for this stage is the shovel. Of course, it will also be used throughout many other stages of gardening. For that reason, it is good to choose a long-lasting one of the most appropriate style. A shovel may have a round point which is ideal for digging, lifting, and throwing material. A flat shovel is better for moving material. Many gardeners make use of both versions.
Other useful tools at this time include fork varieties. A hay fork is very useful for moving compost material. It has rounded prongs while the spading fork has flat ones. The spading fork is great for digging applications, particularly when a gardener is dealing with rocky soil.
It is very advantageous for the future to double dig the area, also known as deep soil preparation. Wheelbarrows come in handy for this task as well as digging boards. The digging board is simply a plank of wood to stand on which discourages the weight of the digger from compressing the soil.
Working so deeply into the soil does a lot for a future garden. Generally the top soil is dug up and the subsoil, about a foot in, is loosened with the fork before the topsoil is replaced.
Another important step of creating an intensive soil overhaul is to add organic material to loosen and improve the soil. Examples of good options include mushroom manure, leaf mold, compost, and peat moss
