In
many areas, the native soil is not great for growing a garden. If you
are looking to put in a flowerbed or plant other types of plants then
you will need good soil. Even if the area you are looking to use has
previously been used for growing you may need to till the land anyway
if it has not been used in some time – a garden tiller will destroy
most weeds and aerate the soil. Small gardens can usually be tilled
by hand but if your garden is moderately large you may want to consider
a dedicated machine.
A garden tiller uses rotating blades called tines to cut into the soil.
These tines may be mounted on the front or rear of the tiller –
each version has its own advantages:
•Front Tine: The tines are located in front of the wheels; since
the wheels are in back this machine is easy to push along. However the
tines will tend to pull the machine forward and on particularly hard
ground this will cause the machine to skip over the top of the soil
instead of digging into it.
•Rear Tine: The tines are located behind the wheels – making
the tiller easier to maneuver and giving more power. If you’ve
never broken the ground in your garden before a rear tine garden tiller
may be ideal.
If your garden is small and your soil has been previously cultivated
then you will most likely only require a small model. These are often
referred to as mini-cultivators. You may want to consider renting a
large tiller when starting your garden and then purchasing a smaller
one for maintaining it.
