Indoor Gardening

Indoor gardening is the practice of raising houseplants in an indoor setting. This setting could be anywhere in a home where enough light reaches to grow plants. Greenhouses are also an example of indoor gardening. Most people think of growing herbs on the window when they think on the topic; but indoor gardening can involve so much more than that.

Two particularly far-fetched examples of indoor gardening are hydroponics and aeroponics. Both these sciences have their roots in the 19th century when it was discovered that plants did not need to absorb nutrients directly from the soil. This lead to the discovery that a plant could be fed all the nutrients it needed to survive directly from water. Later it was discovered that plants could absorb the nutrients sprayed on their roots while they were suspended in the air.

More conventional greenhouse gardening offers climate control that allows us to grow plants which ordinarily would not survive in the native climate of an area. For instance, in a climate that sees ground freezes for several months of the year, citrus plants such as lemon and orange trees cannot thrive. However with the aid of a greenhouse small fruit trees can produce year round in almost any climate. At its simplest that is one of the purposes of indoor gardening, to grow things that cannot survive outside.

The other major yield of indoor gardening is beauty. Growing flowers, herbs, or even bonsai trees is a way to bring life into your home. Orchids, Christmas cactus, tulips, jasmine, and begonias are just a few examples of plants that help bring beauty into your home through their flowers. Other plants such as fichus or aloe vera do not bloom but bring lush greenness indoors.
