An organic garden is a great way to ensure that the produce you consume contains no steroids, pesticides, or unwanted chemicals. The term organic farming originated in a book by Lord Northbourne called Look to the Land. In this book, Northbourne describes a farm as a living organism that should be self sustaining. He considered modern chemical farming practices to run counter to that ideology. Out of his ideas, the concept of organic foods arose.
Organic foods are free of growth hormones, artificial pesticides, insecticides, and herbicides; and they are not genetically altered strains. However in commercial organic farming chemical fertilizers are still used, although restricted. Although most countries require a certification for food to be sold as organic, these certifications still allow for practices some people may find unacceptable. This is what makes organic gardening so wonderful.
In an organic garden you are in control of what products come into contact with your plants. You don’t have to wonder what fertilizer was used, you buy it yourself. You know which insecticides, if any you use. In addition to knowing all this, organic gardening is a relaxing activity. Knowing that you grew the food on your dinner table brings a great sense of satisfaction. Knowing what went into growing it brings peace of mind.
