Organic Gardening Supplies

Organic gardening supplies play a crucial role in an organic garden. The primary difference between organic gardening and traditional gardening is in the use of natural materials rather than the commonly used synthetic materials. Organically grow fruits and vegetables taste better simply because they contain more nutrients. In order to produce these high quality foods, you must begin with the proper supplies.

Organic gardening begins with attention to building healthy, nutrient-rich soil. The most common way to do this is to add plenty of compost as an amendment, which improves the soil structure and feeds the beneficial microorganisms and insects. Compost is one of the most important organic gardening supplies you can use. It is made from decaying organic matter such as garden waste, kitchen waist, leaves, grass clippings and even manure. Organic matter also contains acids that can make plant roots more permeable, improving their uptake of water and nutrients, and can dissolve minerals within the soil, leaving them available for plant roots.

Natural fertilizers and pesticides are also essential organic gardening supplies. Organic fertilizers are healthier for your plants because they are made looser and therefore they can hold more moisture and nutrients, ensuring a much healthier plant. Synthetic fertilizers do not add organic matter to the soil nor do they replenish the hundreds of micro nutrients needed for well-rounded, nutrient-rich food. Instead, they mainly add nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium and contain other harmful toxins that can cause serious health issues if consumed over a long period of time. Use natural pest control methods to promote healthy plant growth. Natural pest control includes manually weeding and promoting helpful insects like bees and butterflies to come visit your garden.

In addition to the importance of building healthy soil and avoiding the use of harmful, synthetic chemicals, other supplies like organic vegetable seeds are equally imperative to ensure the success of the garden. Be sure to plant only USDA certified organic seeds. Any vegetable seed that is not certified by the USDA may have been grown with toxic chemicals and fertilizers that are absorbed into the seed which can alter the genetic makeup and adversely affect the resulting plant.

Once you have prepared your soil and planted your seeds, other organic garden supplies are available to help grow and maintain your garden. These include various types of plant protection, grow lights, hydroponic supplies, climate controllers, air and water pumps, sprayers and applicators and barriers. With these supplies, you are sure to grow a beautiful, healthy organic garden.
