Pond pumps

Pond pumpsIf you have thought about adding a pond to your garden, your thoughts have surely been centered around the many benefits that a pond can provide – peaceful tranquility, the beautiful sight, or the soothing sounds. Nobody wants to spend a lot of time maintaining their pond. Choosing the best option out of a wide variety of pond pumps can help save maintenance time and help you spend more time enjoying your pond.

A pump will help circulate and filter the water in your pond. There are several aspects to consider when looking at pond pumps. The first consideration is whether you want a submersible pond pump or an external pond pump. As you can gather from the names, a submersible pump actually sits under water in the pond. An external pump sits outside of the pond.As a general rule, external pumps can move more water. They are also easier to access. On the other hand, submersible pumps can be more cost efficient and are very easy to install. Submersible pumps also are quieter and can be used to drain your pond. Additionally, some come with fountain and spray attachments so they can double as a small fountain. However, you will need to replace the seal on a submersible pump more often due to the constant water exposure.

Another consideration is how much water you need pumped. All pond pumps are categorized by the amount of water they can pump per hour. As a broad standard, you want the water to be turned at least once an hour. So if you have a 100 gallon pond, you will need a 100 gallon per hour pump. However, this is an overly simple formula and many factors can contribute to needing a more powerful pump. It is much better to have a pump that is a little too powerful than the other way around. In many cases, it is even recommended to have more than one pump in your pond.

Additionally, pond pumps can either be standard voltage or low voltage. Previously, low voltage ponds were more popular because they were considered safer. However, due to advances in technology, standard voltage ponds are no longer considered unsafe.

Pond pumps are an essential element for a clean and beautiful pond. With the right pump, your pond will be easier to maintain, and your overall enjoyment of your garden will increase.
