Solar Garden Lights.
Picture your garden path as it winds through the trees and plantings. The sun has just set and the dusk is settling in. The sounds of crickets fill the summer evening. As the night darkens hooded lights wink on around your path one by one. Your path is illuminated without shattering the ambiance of the gathering night or ruining your night vision. The best part of your new garden lights is they’re solar powered, so they not only illuminate your environment, they are better for it.
Solar garden lights are an invention that has really caught on in the past decade. Initially they were a novelty item for the rich and famous, a status symbol. With the advances in both solar and lighting technology however, the lights became more affordable. Now, solar lighting is the standard for the outdoor path lighting industry.
The reason solar garden lights have taken off is simplicity. A solar garden light is easy to install. You simply put a stake in the ground; slide the light onto the stake, and move on to the next light. There’s no complicated assembly to take up your time. There is no wiring to lie; so you don’t have to dig trenches through your immaculately landscaped garden. In fact everything about solar garden lights seems almost too good to be true.
Solar garden lights operate on two levels. One level is the solar panel, which is usually affixed to the top of the light. This panel generates electricity during the day, which is then stored in a rechargeable battery located beneath the panel. This system operates continuously, as long as there is enough light to create an electric feed
.
The second system is a light sensor, similar to those in a streetlight system. This sensor is attached to a switch within the light itself. As long as there is sufficient light hitting the sensor the switch is open and the light stays off. When it gets dark enough the switch closes, and the light turns on, running off the stored battery power.
If the light is in a position to get clear exposure to sunlight for most of the day, a solar garden light can run all night without consuming its battery life. If the lights have partial sun or the day is cloudy they may only run for a few hours after dark. Solar lights do not put out as much illumination as a conventionally wired garden light, but for many this can be considered a good thing.
Light pollution in major cities is a major waste of resources, with countless megawatts being wasted in most cities to illuminate… the night sky. The more directional and lower powered garden lights are one small way to lower our light pollution. They effectively lower our carbon footprint by providing lighting from off grid as well. A solar garden light won’t revolutionize the world any more than the compact florescent bulb will solve our energy problems. But they are small things that the average person can do to be a part of the solution instead of the problem.
