Winter Gardening

Winter gardening is about harvesting your vegetables in winter, not planting them. There are plenty of vegetables you can grow during the winter, both indoors and out. In addition to growing vegetables, there are a variety of other attractive plants that thrive through the winter, so you can enjoy color and beauty in your garden all year round.

The best winter garden fertilizer is compost and mulch. Compost provides minerals to the plant and mulch prevents the soil to freeze easily. You can also mix compost with the soil and sow your cold weather plants and seeds. Stay away from nitrogen fertilizer. Nitrogen makes plants grow fast and the new growth will be soft and full of moisture, this causes damage to the plants when temperatures drop below freezing.

The time to plant most winter garden vegetables is in the early summer to early fall so they are strong and ready for when the temperatures drop. Not all vegetables will grow in the winter, be sure to plant only crops that will survive the winter months. Members of the brassica and alliums family are ideal and leafy greens such as lettuce, spinach and kale will also grow with little protection.

If you want to improve the soil or keep the weeds out of your garden you can plant cover crops such as clover, rye or vetch. Cover crops, also known as “green manure”, add organic material to the soil for next growing season and should be planted in the late fall. Legumes like Fava beans and vetch are the most common natural cover suitable for cold weather and will also fix nitrogen in the soil.
